Minutes of meeting held on October 5, 2011
The meeting was called to order at 10:16 a.m. by chairman Sue Sanders
PRESENT: Bruce Mahon, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Brad Noble, Jack Reed and Susan Sanders. Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Outreach Worker Deborah Tierney, and Facility Manager Don Sanders.
ABSENT: Earl Johnson.
MINUTES: Motion by Brad to accept the September 7, 2011, minutes was unanimously approved.
REPORTS
OUTREACH WORKER – Deb requested that her work days be changed from Monday, Wednesday and Thursday to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Motion by Brad to change Deb’s hours as requested was carried. Deb would like me to check with Alex if the 25th is okay to have the newsletter ready. She also requested that the mailing list be updated. Flu shot clinic will be Tuesday, October 11th, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., or as long as they have people to serve. Deb plans to attend a MEMA conference in Marlboro with Selectman Mike Kennedy. On Monday the 24th Deb will accompany any interested parties to the COA Board Training in Leicester. It is open to COA board members, staff, volunteers and even Friends groups. Deb highlighted upcoming
speakers and information on Butterworth Funding.
The subject of the hiring of our new Director came up and it was reported that the Selectmen require that we repost the position with the correct working hours, i.e. 15 hours per week instead of the advertised 19.5 hours. We will repost the position with the correct hours with a deadline of October 11th.
At this time, Margaret reported that she attended a luncheon for Senior Center Directors and received a check from Country Bank for Savings for $2,000.00 with the funds to be used at the Director’s discretion.
SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock reported 1,109 contacts were made in September and 92 seniors were served. 423 attended the Senior Center and 151 attended congregate meals. The balance includes: intergenerational activities (70), COA meeting (10), blood pressure clinic (15), senior Tax Work-Off Program (12), cards and games (83), exercise (82), entertainment programs (44), stained glass (47), crafts (10), computer (12), movies (9), speakers (27), meetings (16), Veteran’s Agent (8), and phone calls (90).
SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock. As of September 30, 2011, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $2,506.00, Assessor’s Office $48.00, Holland Elementary School $88.00, and Town Clerk $274.00. Year-to-date total is $2,916.00.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Regular programs: Lunch is served every Monday and Wednesday. Reservations required. Monday Veterans’ Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m.; Tuesday gentle chair Yoga from 10:00 to 11:00 with Eva. Small fee per class. Stained glass classes from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Fee: $20.00 per month. Call Tom Baltazar at 413 245-3163 to register; craft class from 1:30 TO 2:30 p.m. with Linda Artruc, Activities Coordinator. Wednesday 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program with Eva Pittsinger; COA meeting the 1st Wednesday at 10:15 a.m.; Tai Chi from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. with Dave Masera. Small fee per class. Craft classes with Linda Artruc and guest artisans 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday Computer classes 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. with Linda, and Cribbage from 12:15 to 3:00 p.m. Weekdays Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily. We have some activities after 3:00 p.m. to accommodate those
who work. Exercise equipment is available Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. No fee. Wednesday AVADA from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday October 11th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Flu Shot Clinic by CVS; Monday October17th at noon, SHINE about new member enrollment period; Tuesday October 18th and Thursday October 20th from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. scrapbooking with Linda Artruc; Wednesday October 19th at 11:30 a.m. blood pressure clinic with Sue McNulty, RN; Wednesday October 26th at 11:00 a.m. theorem painting by Cindy and from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Osteoporosis Bone Camp with Denise Pontbriand; Friday October 28th from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Swedish Meatball Dinner sponsored by Friends of Holland Seniors; Monday November 7th Lifeline at 12:45 p.m.; Wednesday November 16th at 11:30 a.m. blood pressure
clinic with Sue McNulty, RN. Cultural Grant – Arrangements being made by Linda to request performers John Porcino, singing and storytelling comedian, for March 23, 2012 and Richard Clark as John Barrymore.
FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer – September Treasurer’s report includes: Receipts: GSSSI $630.00, gifts $150.00. Expenses: telephone $67.36, water testing $15.00, Lois Dupre $187.65, Tai Chi instructor $225.09, Senior Center repairs $39.97, trash pick-up $62.30, National Grid $211.02, outside grill $379.24, Eva Pittsinger for 8 classes $240.00, yard care $178.50, well monitoring $235.00, and salaries $1,828.40.
FACILITY MANAGER: The emergency light has been fixed and everything is running fine. Phone problems have been resolved.
Motion to accept the above reports was unanimously approved.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS – None.
NEW BUSINESS:
- Linda said we need new bearings for our speaker system.
- Linda will attend a Serve-Safe class on November 7th from 8:30 to 4:30.
- Sharon Ashleigh would like to hold a farmer’s market from May through September from 11:00 to 2:00 on Sundays. This is under the umbrella of the Friends.
- Requests for use of the Senior Center were reviewed and approved.
Motion by Brad to adjourn the meeting at 11:22 was unanimously approved.
